Chapter Twenty-Two

MARC AND I WALKED into Tony’s hand-in-hand. Hannah stood in the entry area talking to Danny. Her posture was stiff, and he held out his hands with shoulders slumped. The expression on his face told me he wanted something from Hannah.

I let go of Marc and touched Hannah’s arm. “Hannah, I’m so sorry we’re late. It’s my fault. Where’s Sheriff Stone?”

Danny’s chin shot up, and his eyes narrowed. “You called the sheriff? Hannah and I were having a civil conversation.”

Marc stepped in front of Danny. “It looked to me like you were the only one talking. How’d you get out of jail?”

“Bail, baby. The charges won’t stick. The judge knows it, and so do you.” He poked Marc’s chest with his finger.

Marc’s jaw tightened. “Hannah, do you have anything to say to Danny?”

“Not unless it’s to tell him to leave me alone, but I’ve done that. He refuses to back off.”

Marc nodded. “You heard the lady.”

“It’s a public restaurant. You can’t kick me out.” Danny clenched his fists.

“No, but I can.” Tony joined us with a large pizza paddle in his hand.

Danny muttered something unbecoming a gentleman and stormed out of the restaurant.

“Mi dispiace.” Tony shook his head. “I’m sorry about the riffraff. I keep hoping the boy will wake up and become respectable. You know what I mean?”

Wade stepped through the doorway, wearing dark jeans and a solid button-up. “By the looks on your faces, you ran into Danny. He brushed past me on the sidewalk, mumbling obscenities. No law against cussing, and I didn’t want to be any later.”

“Shh, shh.” Tony lifted his hands. “Come with me to the best table. Tonight’s on me to make up for the unpleasantness.”

We all tried to argue, but Tony led us to a table for four. “I’ll return with drinks and appetizers. Relax and forget about it.” He shuffled away with his arthritic gait.

I obeyed Tony and relaxed into my seat. “He’s always so nice to me.”

Hannah’s eyes widened. “I’m impressed he got Danny to leave.”

Marc nodded. “Tony has a soft spot for Andi Grace.”

I shrugged. “He’s special to me, too.”

Marc squeezed my hand. “We probably should discuss what just happened so we can enjoy our dinner.”

Hannah pulled hand sanitizer from her pretty brown leather purse and squirted some on her hands. “Danny must be worried about his recent arrests. He’s still pushing me for a debate, and I feel like it’s too soon.”

Wade sat beside Hannah and placed his hands on the table. His muscular chest strained the buttons of his shirt. “If you agree to a debate, you better brace yourself for it to be ugly.”

“What about his attack on Andi Grace? Can that prevent him for running for office?” Hannah stopped rubbing her hands together.

“The witnesses didn’t mind saving her, but so far nobody’s willing to make an official statement.”

My pulse soared. “Are you kidding?”

“Afraid not.” He ran a hand over his light beard. “Try not to worry about it. You’ve got a good attorney.”

“Yes, I do.” I squeezed Marc’s hand.
